Who can apply for a Japan eVisa in the UAE?
The Japan eVisa is available to UAE residents who meet the eligibility criteria set by Japanese immigration authorities. Both your nationality and your UAE residency status are checked during the process.
You are generally eligible if you:
- Hold a valid passport (valid for at least 6 months from your travel date)
- Have a valid UAE residence visa (at least 3 months remaining)
- Have confirmed travel plans with return flight details
- Are travelling for short-term tourism only
- Have a clean immigration and travel history
Who cannot apply for the Japan eVisa?
The following applicants are not eligible for the eVisa and must apply through VFS or the embassy instead:
- Your nationality is not on the approved eVisa list
- You are travelling for work, study, or a long-term stay
- Your UAE residence visa has expired or has less than 3 months remaining
- You do not meet the financial or document requirements
- You have a history of visa rejection or immigration issues
- You are unable to provide a confirmed travel itinerary
If you fall into any of the above categories, you must apply for a Japan sticker visa through VFS or the Japanese Embassy.
Validity of Your UAE Residence Visa
One of the most common reasons for visa delays is applying when your UAE residence visa has very little time left. Your UAE residence visa must have at least 3 months of validity remaining from the date you apply: not just from your travel date.
If your Emirates ID or residence visa is currently being renewed, wait until the renewal is fully complete before applying for your Japan visa. Submitting an application with outdated or pending documents leads to rejection.
Required Documents for Japan Visa (UAE Residents)
Preparing your documents carefully is the single most important step in the application. Use this checklist:
Documents Required For All Applicants
- Passport copy (valid for at least 6 months from travel date, minimum 2 blank pages)
- UAE residence visa copy (must have at least 3 months validity)
- Emirates ID copy (front and back)
- Passport: size photograph (45x35mm, white background : see photo rules below)
- Confirmed flight booking / itinerary
- Hotel reservation for entire stay
- Bank statements (last 3 months, stamped by the bank)
- Employment letter / NOC (stamped, stating job title, salary, and start date)
- Day-by-day travel itinerary
Additional Documents For Multiple Entry Visa
- Personal cover letter explaining the reason for multiple entries
- Proof of high financial standing or consistent high income
- Records of previous visits to Japan (if applicable)
IMPORTANT: If applying for the Japan eVisa online, only upload the documents specifically listed on the portal. Uploading any additional documents will result in automatic rejection of your application and you will need to reapply from scratch.
Passport Photo Requirements
Many applications are delayed or rejected due to incorrect photos. Make sure your photo meets ALL of the following requirements:
- Size: 45mm x 35mm
- Background: Plain white : no patterns, shadows, or objects
- Taken within the last 6 months
- Full face clearly visible, looking straight at the camera
- No glasses, hats, or head coverings (exceptions for religious reasons)
- No filters, editing, or digital alterations
- No shadows on the face or background
A rejected photo is one of the easiest delays to avoid. Have your photo taken at a professional photo shop if you are unsure about the quality.

How to Apply For a Japan eVisa From The UAE (Step-By-Step)
The online process is straightforward once your documents are ready. Most applicants can complete this without visiting any office.
- Confirm Your Eligibility: Check that your nationality is on the approved list at the official MOFA Japan eVisa portal (mofa.go.jp) and that your UAE residence visa has at least 3 months remaining.
- Create Your Account: Register on the official Japan eVisa portal. Use an active email address: all updates and your approval notification will be sent there. Check your spam/junk folder regularly.
- Prepare Your Documents: Gather your passport copy, UAE residence visa copy, Emirates ID, passport photo (45x35mm), confirmed flight booking, hotel reservation, 3:month bank statement, employment letter, and day-by-day travel itinerary.
- Upload you're Documents: Upload only the documents listed on the portal: nothing more. Clear, full scans only. Cropped or blurry scans cause delays.
- Pay the Fee: AED 80 for a single-entry eVisa, payable online via credit or debit card.
- Wait for Processing: Standard processing takes 5-7 working days. During peak travel seasons (cherry blossom, Golden Week, summer holidays), it can extend to 3 weeks. Apply at least 4 weeks in advance.
- Receive and Print your eVisa: You will receive an approval email with a downloadable visa document. Print a copy AND keep a digital backup on your phone. Immigration officers may request it on arrival in Japan.
Applying Through VFS Japan (Sticker Visa)
If you are not eligible for the eVisa, or you need to stay beyond 30 days, you must apply through VFS Japan. Here is what you need to know about emirate jurisdiction: this is a leading cause of rejections:
- Dubai & Northern Emirates residents : Apply through VFS Global Japan, Dubai
- Abu Dhabi residents : Abu Dhabi residents must also apply through VFS.
Applying through the wrong emirate's office will result in your application being rejected. Always check your emirate of residence before booking your VFS appointment.
Processing Time For Japan Visa Applications
It is always better to apply early. Here is a realistic guide to processing timelines:
- Standard processing : 5-7 working days
- Peak seasons (cherry blossom, Golden Week, school holidays, summer) : Up to 3 weeks
- Recommended lead time : At least 4 weeks before your travel date
Apply even earlier: 6 weeks ahead: if your travel dates fall during cherry blossom season (late March to early May) or the summer holiday period (July-August). These are the busiest visa processing periods of the year.
Japan Visa Validity and Length of Stay
- Visa validity : 3 months from the date of issue : you must enter Japan within this period
- Maximum stay : Up to 90 days for tourism
- Extensions : Rarely granted : plan your trip within the approved duration
Common Reasons For Japan Visa Rejection or Delay
Most delays and rejections are completely avoidable. Here are the most common issues our clients face:
- Incomplete or missing documents (especially employment letter or bank statements)
- Incorrect or inconsistent travel dates between the application form and flight bookings
- Weak or insufficient financial proof (irregular income, sudden large deposits)
- Poor quality scans : blurry, cropped, or dark images
- Passport validity issues : less than 6 months remaining
- Uploading extra documents to the eVisa portal (causes automatic rejection)
- Applying through the wrong emirate's VFS office
- Outdated or expired UAE residence visa at the time of application
- Not checking the spam/junk folder for visa notifications

- Stay in hotels or guesthouses near the train stations to avoid the cost of local transport.
